Now we self-host

My home server / self hosting journey is already 2 months old!

My main goal was to move away from cloud based services (paid or free) that I can reliably host myself, in an attempt to limit the amount of personal data I have exposed. (1)

The hardware I had lying around did not cover the basic needs for a home lab, so I opted for an all-in-one solution with the AOOSTAR WTR PRO 5825U.

This nicely sized case includes the Ryzen 7 5825U CPU which provides all the computing power I will need in the forseeable future and is extendable enough with 4* HDD slots, 2* M.2 2280-NVME PCIe 3.0 slots and 2* DDR4-3200 RAM slots.

For the operating system I took the dead-simple route and went with TrueNAS Scale, more on that in a later post.

The server is connected via ethernet to a Cudy WR3000 configured in client mode which bridges over wifi with my internet provider's locked modem. Not an ideal setup as I would like my server to be directly connected via cable to my router but my current's home layout does not help.

So far I am selfhosting the following:

  • Full *arr stack with Lidarr, Sonarr, Radarr, Prowlarr, Bazarr, and Maintainarr
  • Immich
  • Navidrome for music and Jellyfin for video
  • File Browser
